Book on the greater end of intelligence

The Liber de maiore fine intellectus amoris et honoris (English: Book on the greatest end of intelligence: love and honor), is a political work of considerable importance written by Ramon Llull in 1305, during his stay in Montpellier. This work is a reflection of Llull’s deep and enduring devotion to the Christian faith and his commitment to preaching and converting “infidels” to the Christian faith.
The central theme of the work is preaching and evangelization, following what Llull calls the “model of the apostles”. For Llull, this model involved not only preaching to Christians, but also founding schools for the teaching and dissemination of the Christian faith among Muslims, Jews, Eastern Christians and Tatars.
A second important theme in the work is the proposal of a military crusade to the Holy Land. Llull not only defends the need for such a crusade, but also provides practical details on the organization of it. It speaks of the need for a strong and capable leader for the crusade, and offers a detailed itinerary for the expedition.
In his vision of the crusade, Llull sees the figure of a “fighting king”, a leader who not only rules, but also fights for his faith and his people. He considers the route that passes through Hispania and North Africa as the only viable one for the expedition, which shows his knowledge and understanding of the geography and political dynamics of the time.
The book on the greater end of intelligence is a reflection of Llull’s beliefs and aspirations, as well as the political and religious changes of his time.
