Book of the Order of Chivalry

The Book of the Order of Chivalry is divided into seven parts, “in the likeness of the seven planets.” This work, a true manual for the good Christian gentleman, decisively influenced the Libro del Cavallero et del Escudero by Don Juan Manuel and spread rapidly due to its beauty and brevity.
Ramon Llull, also known in Spanish as Raimundo Lulio, was born in Palma de Mallorca around 1232 into a wealthy and noble family. He was part of the court of Kings James I and James II of Aragon. In July 1263, a sudden turn in his life made him a fervent missionary of the faith of Christ, becoming undoubtedly the most important mystic of the European Middle Ages. Around 1275, when he definitively left the Aragonese court, he wrote the Book of the Order of Chivalry.
The book is a manual for the ideal Christian gentleman. It is a medieval text that holds that knights have honor and dominion over the people to organize and defend them. It deals with the principle of chivalry, the office of the knight, the examination which the squire must pass when he wants to enter the order of chivalry, the manner in which the knight should be armed, the meaning of arms to him, the proper customs and the honor due to a true knight.
