Book of the contemplation of God

The Book of Contemplation in God is one of Ramon Llull’s most important and extensive works. It was written between 1271 and 1273 and serves as a compendium of his philosophical and theological ideas. The work is a treatise on mystical theology and philosophy containing a series of meditations on the nature of God and the relationship between God and creation.
Ramon Llull, a pivotal figure in Catalan literature and an early promoter of logic and philosophy in Europe, was known for his focus on reasoning as a tool for understanding and communicating the truths of the faith. His method, which he called “Art,” sought to provide a rational basis for the Christian faith and was used to debate non-Christians, particularly Jews and Muslims.
In the Book of Contemplation in Dio, Llull provides a framework for reflecting on the essence of God, creation and morality. This framework is profoundly Christian, and in turn, shows a surprising modernity in some respects, with an emphasis on reason and analysis that prefigures some later developments in philosophy and theology.
Although Llull was harshly persecuted by the Inquisition, his thought has great relevance in current European philosophy. The first three chapters of this book, which deal with joy, stand out for their modernity and unusual approach for their time. Because of his role as a unifying figure and promoter of the three Mediterranean cultures, it is valuable that his work be translated into their languages, including Spanish.
