Book of reprobation of some errors of Averroes (in Latin, Liber de reprobationis aliquorum errorum Averrois) is a work by Ramon Llull in which he confronts the concepts and theories proposed by the Islamic philosopher Averroes, one of the most outstanding figures of Aristotelian thought in Islam. This book is part of the philosophical and theological discussions that took place during the Middle Ages, in which Christian, Jewish and Muslim thinkers confronted and interacted with each other.
Averroes, also known as Ibn Rushd, was a twelfth-century Andalusian thinker whose interpretations of Aristotle had a profound influence on medieval and Renaissance thought. However, his views also provoked controversy and rejection by some sectors of society, especially those who advocated a more orthodox interpretation of sacred scriptures. Among these controversial points was, for example, the theory of the unity of the intellect, according to which all people share the same rational or intellective entity.
In his Book of Reprobation of Some Errors of Averroes, Llull offers a critique of Averroes’ views, defending a vision more aligned with Christian orthodoxy. He argues for the existence of multiple individual souls and refutes other Averroist theories, using his characteristic rational and logical approach.
