The Book of Good Love is an extensive composition of 1,728 stanzas written around 1330, in Castile before the Black Death where Christians, Jews and Muslims still lived together in peace. It is one of the most notable works of the mester de clerecía and medieval literature. In it, the Archpriest of Hita offers a supposedly autobiographical story where he exposes in a didactic and detailed way the vicissitudes of carnal love, as well as its moral and spiritual dangers.
Through a succession of fables, apologues and exemplary allegories, the adventures and learning that lead the protagonist from concupiscent love to true love are described and examined, and the reader is offered a metaphor of the spiritual path to reach the caritas and the salvation of his soul.
However, ambiguity remains one of the most remarkable features of this text: how to know if the account of the protagonist’s adventures is an invitation to carnal pleasures or a warning against the vices and weaknesses of the human soul?
Not in vain the author, aware of the ambiguity of his work, appeals from the beginning to the wisdom of the reader to discern the deep meaning of what he is about to read.

This edition of the Book of Good Love is based on the Codex of Salamanca (S), which corresponds to the second version of the work and incorporates passages that do not appear in the other two codices that are preserved, the Codex Gayoso (G) and the Codex of Toledo (T).
