Autobiography of Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda

The Autobiography of Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, is actually the first series of intimate letters addressed to Ignacio de Cepeda, lawyer and writer.
The letters gathered here begin on July 23, 1839, and the last one preserved is dated March 26, 1854.
In his Autobiography, Gómez de Avellaneda recounts his life up to the time of writing, when he was twenty-five years old. The author expresses her loving feeling towards the aforementioned Cepeda and, at the same time, manifests her nature as a romantic writer.
They are intimate letters addressed to a single recipient, a requirement that is evident from the beginning. Avellaneda implores his receiver to respect the two conditions he manifests in his epistolary relationship. First: “Let the fire devour this paper as soon as it is read.” Second, “let no one but you in the world know that it has existed.”
However, once the recipient died, the Huelva professor Lorenzo Cruz de Fuentes edited in 1907, through the mediation of Cepeda’s widow, María de Córdova y Govantes, the collection of letters of the writer destined to privacy. This makes the private public.
