Authentic relation of idolatries

Authentic relation of idolatries reflects the traditional Catholic concern to preserve Christian orthodoxy and the need to inform, criticize, exemplify and seek remedies that end the reminiscences of indigenous religious customs.
Thus Gonzalo de Balsalobre wrote this chronicle of the evangelization of the indigenous, one of the many manifestations in America of the discourse that censors the aboriginal religions of Mexico.
Balsalobre was parish priest of San Miguel Sola, in the Sierra Sur, during the first half of the seventeenth century. In the 1630s and 1650s he devoted himself to investigating the idolatrous practices that subsisted among the Zapotecs of that region.
The purpose of the treaty is to communicate the inquisitorial processes carried out against the Oaxacan indigenous communities.

“Hanse concluded, and sentenced some cases against the following prisoners:
Against Melchior Lopez, native Indian of the town of San Francisco, subject to the head of Zola, for having consulted Diego Luis, Master in idolatries, and spells, believing it, and executing his orders, and received from the aforesaid a four manuscript of this teaching, having it in his possession more than ten and nine years, and used of the said notebook in some articles in which he was convicted, and he is confessed, and penitent.”
