This Anthology of Fray Luis de León includes the following texts:

  • Response of Fray Luis de León while imprisoned in prison
  • Translation and explanation of Psalm 41
  • Explanation of Psalm 26 by the master Fray Luis de León
  • Dedicatory letter to the prioress mothers Ana de Jesús and Discalced Carmelite Sisters of the monastery of Madrid M. Fray Luis de León, health in Jesus Christ
  • Apology of Father M. Fray Luis de León
  • To the Empress Our Lady

Among them we highlight his response to accusations that he was a victim while in prison. When his translation of the Song of Songs from Hebrew was disseminated, Fray Luis de León was accused of violating the prohibition of the Council of Trent, which established as official the Latin version of St. Jerome. Prosecuted by the Inquisition, he was imprisoned between 1572 and 1577. However, in the end he was found innocent and was able to return to his classes, among other things, thanks to his famous response.

Response of Fray Luis de León while imprisoned in prison

[Sobre la Exposición del Cantar de los Cantares.]
(…) where there is some greater difficulty, and I would like to pass silently through it; for I do not know if I will find suitable words to declare what I feel. But since the force and injury of my enemies compels me to it, forgive me have honest and religious ears, if for my due and necessary defense the veil with which St. Jerome wanted to cover up the shame, which in his opinion he found in this place, should be lifted; and if I speak of things, which nature made for an honest end, with words used; which, if vicious use hinders them, clean judgment and dealing only with the knowledge of the truth cleanses them. For to the clean and good, who have done nothing to pervert natural use, everything natural is clean to them, and only vice, which is disorder of nature, offends them.
