Amazon in the Indies is a strange piece in the whole of Tirso de Molina’s work. It is inspired by the conquest and evangelization of the indigenous people of America. It belongs to the trilogy dedicated to the Pizarro family that includes the pieces:

  • Everything is to give one thing (about Francisco Pizarro),
  • Amazon in the Indies (about Gonzalo Pizarro)
  • and Loyalty against Envy (about Hernando Pizarro).

The first work of this dramatic cycle, Everything is giving in one thing, is about the childhood of the most famous of the brothers, Francisco Pizarro, while the last comedy of the trilogy, Loyalty versus envy, is about the misadventures of Hernando Pizarro, imprisoned for twenty years in the castle of La Mota in Medina del Campo.
That was the sentence he served for executing his enemy Diego de Almagro, during the conquest of Peru.
Amazon in the Indies stages the vicissitudes of Gonzalo Pizarro, who rebelled against the viceroy and was also executed for betraying the royal power.
As some scholars have already pointed out, we find a moral intention in the work, which is to criticize the corrupt power structures in Tirso’s time.
In Amazonas en las Indias the author omits crucial issues in politics, such as the promulgation of the New Laws, led by Fray Bartolomé de las Casas in favor of the Indians. Our author creates a narrative with numerous allegorical elements, which ennoble the Spanish conqueror. Tirso de Molina lived for some time in Hispaniola (present-day Dominican Republic) and returned to Spain in 1618.
His stay in America inspired this series of works about the conquistadors.
