The Tratado de las supersticiones y costumbres gentílicas que hoy viven entre los indios naturales de esta Nueva España (Treatise of the superstitions and gentile customs that today live among the natural Indians of this New Spain) relates a journey of Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón, brother of the novo-Hispanic playwright.
To write his book, Alarcón traveled the Gulf of California and reached the Colorado River.
During his voyage he had contact with the aborigines of the area and compiled abundant information on their warrior, religious and even sexual practices and customs, which appeared in the Treatise, published in 1629.
